Albuquerque, NM was founded in 1706, starting as the Spanish colonial outpost of Ranchos de Albuquerque, carrying today a rich historical Spanish cultural heritage, being recognized as the largest city in New Mexico State, and the 34th largest one in USA, with a population estimated, during the census of 2008, at a number of more than 521 000 inhabitants.
Besides the fact that Albuquerque, NM is nationally known for the fact that it is home of the Kirtland Air Force Base, Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute and the Sandia National Laboratories, the fact that it contains the main campus of University of New Mexico, also brought the city to national attention.
The University of New Mexico, commonly known as UNM, was founded in 1889, under the name of New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, growing from the merging with the Las Cruces College, which was opened back when New Mexico was still a territory, led by Hiram Hadley, who was a respected educator from Indiana.
The university status was granted in 1960, by a state constitutional amendment, and the current name of University of Mexico was settled. Over the years, UNM grew, and has today branch campuses in Los Alamos, Gallup, Taos and Valencia County, with the main campus located in Albuquerque, NM, which spread on over 600 acres of land.
The UNM athletic teams are known as the New Mexico Lobos, with Lobo as their mascot, which compete in the Mountain West Conference, being best known for their achievements in basketball and football.
The basketball team from UNM is renowned for the University Arena, also known as ‘’the Pit’’, the site where the famous 1983 NCAA basketball championship took place, in which the University of Houston was defeated by North Carolina State University, coached by Jim Valvano.
The list of notable alumni from UNM contains names such as: Eddie Guerrero, a WWE wrestler, Brian Urlacher, Chicago Bears linebacker, Michael Cooper, former NBA player, Jerry D. Thompson, renowned historian of the American Southwest and John Adair, pioneer of Navajo & Zuni cultural studies.
